What’s in the name: Bowne Street Press
Picture this: You're on the 7 train leaving Manhattan. The cart is full with tired commuters (pre-pandemic, of course) and families returning home after a long day. You've snatched an exceptional seat, nestled against an end rail, near the door. The hot summer heat gusts in, uninvited, as they open and close. You put on your headphones, relax back, and get ready for a nearly hour-long ride ahead of you. The 7 is special. Within minutes, you emerge from the city's underground catacombs and appear to be lifted into the clouds. It goes east, deeper into the borough of Queens, twisting and rocking between storefronts and apartment buildings. Queens, New York, is the world's most diverse area. That's right, not just in New York City or New York State, but throughout the entire country... the entire planet.
Queens IS New York, despite what any Manhattanites may tell you. It’s the hidden gem, its the backbone of the city.
The evidence of its diversity is seen in the Indian High Fashion shops of Jackson Heights, it’s tasted in the Elmhurst empanadas, and it’s heard in your very own cart—languages and dialects spill out of your train at every station. And then, at the very end, you reach your stop. Flushing, Queens—a bustling East Asian hub at the edge of the borough.
Flushing is a special place to our founder. It’s where she lived post-college, in a studio apartment just steps away from Main Street. It was her first home with her now husband, and their adopted cat. It was home. When deciding on a name for this publishing press, she figured what better name than the street she lived on—Bowne Street. When diversity and non-western inspired tales are so important, why not name the imprint after the vibrant street, in the most diverse place in the world?
